Why we created HomeCrew

Most chore apps drift toward one of two extremes: a rigid task tracker that feels like admin, or a points machine that leans on streaks, badges and competition to keep children engaged. Neither reflects how cooperation actually grows in a family. We built HomeCrew for the calm middle: a private space where contributing at home feels good, where effort is noticed, and where a parent stays gently in control of what is asked, what it is worth and when it is approved.

We also wanted to recognise more than housework. Reading, preparing for a test, helping someone without being asked, sticking with a sport, practising an instrument — these are the small, repeatable steps that shape a child. HomeCrew treats them as first-class alongside chores, without turning them into a scoreboard.

The philosophy behind chores, goals and rewards

Effort, not outcomes. HomeCrew is designed to reward thoughtful effort, consistency, courage and kindness — the things a child can influence — rather than grades, winning or popularity. A goal is defined by what a good effort looks like, agreed between parent and child.

Cooperation, not competition. Progress is personal to each child. There are no sibling leaderboards and no public rankings, ever. Gentle streaks and family goals encourage steady participation without the manipulative engagement patterns common in consumer apps.

Parents in control. A parent creates or selects each chore and goal, sets fair point values, and approves completed work before any points are awarded. Children can mark work as done and add an optional note or photo, but they cannot award themselves points.

Meaningful, honest rewards. Points become family-defined rewards — pocket money recorded in the app, additional device time, or a custom treat. HomeCrew records the reward a family agrees on; it does not transfer money or control device settings. The family applies the reward itself.

Our privacy principles

HomeCrew is private by default. It contains no advertising, does not sell family information, and has no public child profiles, public messaging or leaderboards. Family data stays on the device unless a parent explicitly turns on browser access to synchronise it across the family's own devices. Family codes, PINs, photos and activity history are never shown on public pages. You can read the full detail in our Privacy Policy.

How we handle developmental claims

When we point to research — for example, that children who take part in household tasks from an early age tend to do better later in life — we link to the underlying source rather than a headline. That particular finding traces to a University of Minnesota longitudinal study (Rossmann, 2002) and to the long-running Harvard Study of Adult Development; it is frequently, and imprecisely, called "the Harvard study on chores." We try to describe such evidence carefully and avoid promising specific results. HomeCrew is a family-organisation tool, not a guarantee of any developmental outcome.
